About

Thalia Maria was born and raised in Athens, Greece. After completing her high school education, she was admitted to the Faculty of Economics of the School of Law, Economics and Political Sciences at the Athens National Kapodistrian University. Before long, her studies proved insufficient to fulfil her creative ambitions and she decided to chase her dreams of art. She applied to the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome, Italy where she studied Jewellery Design from 1987 until 1991.

She worked as a jewel designer for the most prestigious jewellery shops and workshops in Athens from 1990 until 1995. When, once again, her work no longed proved sufficiently fulfilling, she decided to pursue sculptural objects on a larger scale and admitted in a two-year MA in Goldsmithing, Metal-work & Jewellery at the Royal College of Art in London.

After Thalia completed the RCA course in 1997, until the present day, she has worked exclusively as a silversmith. The majority of objects she has created are made of silver, but she has also worked, to a lesser extent, with glass and bronze. Her work celebrates the beauty of simple, everyday objects; of nature, tradition and ritual. It expresses a personal fascination with silver and the challenging yet meditative pro- cess of hand-forging. Her timeless pieces are made to be used and enjoyed.

Thalia Maria currently divides her time between Athens and London. She keeps a workshop in Athens, where she is directly involved in creating her silver work with her silversmith. In jewellery projects, she has always been involved solely in the design stage. Her work has been on regular display in Europe and the USA at venues including: Mouki Mou shop (London & Athens), Sotheby’s (London & New York), Victoria and Albert Museum, Galerie Sofie Lachaert, Galerie Marzee, COLLECT (when held at the V&A and Saatchi museums) and LDF at Mint Shop. When not exhibiting, you can find her work at Mint shop in London, Benaki museum in Athens, Indigo Atelier in Athens, Subert gallery in Milan and Sofie Lachaert gallery in Belgium.
